JUDGE BONNIE LEWMAN SABRAW
ALAMEDA COUNTY
TRIAL JUDGE OF THE YEAR

The Superior Court of California, County of Alameda, announces that Judge Bonnie Lewman Sabraw was named “Alameda County Trial Judge of the Year.” The Alameda County Contra Costa Trial Lawyer’s Association (ACCTLA) conferred this honor upon Judge Sabraw at the 30th Annual Judges’ Night Meeting of the Association on January 16, 2001, at the Claremont Hotel. The Honorable Martin J. Jenkins, United States District Court Judge, Northern District of California, was the keynote speaker.

Judge Sabraw accepted the award and stated, “I am sincerely honored to receive this special recognition from the ACCTLA, an organization comprised of accomplished professional trial attorneys.”

The award recognizes Judge Bonnie Lewman Sabraw’s role adjudicating cases involving civil litigation and her professionalism, knowledge, dedication and commitment to excellence as a judge of the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda.

Judge Sabraw is currently assigned to Department 512, a civil trial and case management department in the Hayward Hall of Justice. As a Superior Court Judge, she has also presided in Family Law and Criminal Trial Departments.

Judge Sabraw was appointed to the office of Superior Court Judge in July 1993 by Governor Pete Wilson and ran unopposed for election in 1994 and 2000.

Prior to her elevation to the office of Judge of the Superior Court, Judge Sabraw was appointed to the office of Judge for the Municipal Court, San Leandro-Hayward Judicial District, Alameda County, by Governor Deukmejian on August 25, 1988. Judge Sabraw served as Presiding Judge for San Leandro-Hayward Municipal Court in 1992.

Prior to her judicial career, she was a partner in the Hayward law firm of Varni, Fraser, Hartwell, McNichols & Rodgers providing real property and business litigation legal services from 1981 to 1988. Judge Sabraw also held the office of Deputy District Attorney in Alameda County Office of the District Attorney from 1979 to 1981.

Judge Sabraw is a member of the California Judges Association, the Alameda County Bar Association, Women Lawyers of Alameda County and the Earl Warren American Inn of Court. She was appointed to the State Trial Court Coordination Committee and served in that capacity from 1992 to 1998. She is active in numerous judicial policy committees in the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda, including the Executive, Personnel, Bench Bar Liaison and Civil Committees.

Judge Sabraw was admitted to the California Bar on November 30, 1979. She graduated from San Francisco Law School in 1979.

Judge Sabraw is married to Justice M. O. Sabraw (Ret.) and they reside in Fremont.
