Proof of Correction Violations

  1. Where Do I Get my Ticket Signed off?

Proof of correction for any traffic violation may be signed off by any CHP or a peace officer engaged in vehicle code enforcement.

    • License and registration violations may be certified as corrected by DMV
    • Brake, lamp smog device or muffler violations may be certified as corrected by any station licensed to do so for the violation.
    • Violations other than traffic, i.e. dog license, building code, zoning, etc., must be signed off by an officer of that agency.
    • Proof of insurance must be shown to a clerk at the court.

  2. Is there a Cost for Getting my Ticket Signed off?

Police agencies may charge you a fee to sign off the citation. You will also pay the court a $10.00 required dismissal fee.

  3. Do I Have to Correct my Violation or Can I Just Pay the Bail Amount?

Your courtesy notice will indicate whether you can pay for the violation or whether proof of correction for the violation is mandatory. For example, if you receive a violation of VC4000(a), no current registration, you must get current registration on the vehicle to clear the citation or go to court. You cannot forfeit bail for this violation, as the law requires mandatory proof of correction.

  4. What Can I Do if I Cannot Correct the Violation?

If you cannot correct the violation that requires mandatory correction, you will need to set a court appearance to explain the reasons to the Commissioner. If the violation does not require mandatory proof of correction, you can forfeit bail and close the case. (Your courtesy notice will tell you if the violation requires a mandatory proof of correction or if you can forfeit bail on the violation.)

  5. What If It Is Not My Vehicle?

If you signed the citation, you are responsible for taking care of the citation. If you cannot correct the violation because it is not your vehicle, you can forfeit bail if the violation does not require you to show proof of correction or set a court appearance to explain your case to the Commissioner.
