JUDGE BARBARA J. MILLER ~ ALAMEDA COUNTY
TRIAL JUDGE OF THE YEAR

The Superior Court of California, County of Alameda, announces that Judge Barbara J. Miller was named “Alameda County Trial Judge of the Year.” The Alameda County Contra Costa Trial Lawyer’s Association (ACCTLA) conferred this honor upon Judge Miller at the 31st Annual Judges’ Night Meeting of the Association on January 15, 2002, at the Claremont Hotel.

Judge Miller accepted the award and stated, “I am deeply honored to receive this special recognition from the ACCTLA, an organization comprised of accomplished professional trial attorneys. The provision of excellent public service requires our collaborative efforts to promote justice, public trust and efficient resolution of cases.”

The award recognizes Judge Barbara Miller’s role adjudicating cases, her leadership and vision in the unified superior court, and her professionalism, knowledge, dedication and commitment to excellence as a judge.

Judge Miller is the Assistant Presiding Judge and also is the Supervising Judge at the Hayward Hall of Justice, a position she has held since 2000. She presides in Department 511. As a Superior Court Judge, she has also presided in Family Law, Probate, Civil and Criminal Trial Departments.

Judge Miller was elected by the Superior Court Judges of Alameda County to the position of Assistant Presiding Judge of the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda for the 2002 and 2003 calendar years, at a meeting of the judges on June 4, 2001. In that capacity, she assists the Presiding Judge with the judicial administration of the court, as specified in Rule 6.603 of the California Rules of Court.

Judge Miller is a member of the Court’s Executive Committee and also serves on the following court committees: Bench/Bar Liaison, Community Focused Court Planning, Bench/Bar Media, Facilities, Information Technology, Family Law and Civil.

Judge Miller was elected to the office of Superior Court Judge in 1996. Previous to her election, she served as a Court Commissioner in the Superior Court of California, County of Alameda from 1987 - 1996.

Prior to her judicial career, she practiced law for ten years, including six years with the firm formerly known as Thelen, Marrin, Johnson & Bridges in San Francisco.

Judge Miller has served as a faculty member for the annual California Judges College since 1989, and other judicial education programs, including the areas of Probate, Family Law, and Domestic Violence. She serves as a faculty member for various attorney educational programs. Judge Miller is active in the community and played a key role in developing and implementing a court educational outreach program for youth in local public middle schools.

Judge Miller was admitted to the California Bar in December 1978. She attended and graduated from the University of San Francisco School of Law (1974 - 1978), receiving her Juris Doctor Degree, Cum Laude while working full time. Judge Miller was formerly a member of the McAuliffe Honor Society and the recipient of Am Jur Awards for Civil Procedure (1976) and Estate Planning (1978). She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree, University of Kentucky (1969-1973), while working part-time and was an Honors student.
